GoHighLevel vs Gumroad is a question I hear from Australian creators who started with a single PDF or template on Gumroad and are now selling coaching, courses and bundles. The checkout still works, but the fees, the missing CRM and the lack of follow-up automation start to sting as revenue grows.

This guide breaks down what each platform actually costs at A$2k, A$10k and A$30k a month, how tax handling differs, and which features you gain or lose. It sits alongside our other checkout comparisons, including GoHighLevel vs ThriveCart for checkout costs, so you can compare like with like.

Stripe AU international cards3.5% + A$0.30, plus 2% if currency conversion is needed

How Gumroad and GoHighLevel charge you (it is not the same model)

Gumroad is a percentage platform. Per Gumroad's pricing page (October 2026), you pay nothing monthly, then 10% + US$0.50 on every direct sale and a flat 30% on sales that come through Gumroad Discover.

Gumroad's own fees help article states that its 10% does not include credit card processing or PayPal fees. Third-party guides commonly put that processing at around 2.9% + US$0.30 per card sale, so the real direct-sale take is closer to 13% than 10%.

One catch with Discover: Gumroad's help content says that once a product is listed there, a buyer it attributes to the marketplace is charged at the marketplace rate. If you only drive your own traffic, keep that in mind before opting in.

GoHighLevel: flat software fee, your own Stripe

GoHighLevel is a flat subscription. Per HighLevel's pricing page (October 2026), plans are US$97 Starter, US$297 Unlimited and US$497 Agency Pro per month, with annual options at US$970, US$2,970 and US$4,970.

HighLevel takes no percentage of your sales. Payments run through your own Stripe account, connected inside the sub-account's payment integrations, so the processing fee is whatever Stripe charges you. Our GoHighLevel Stripe integration guide walks through the connection step by step.

Per Stripe's Australian pricing page (October 2026), standard domestic cards are 1.65% + A$0.30 and international cards are 3.5% + A$0.30, plus 2% where currency conversion is needed. Stripe notes its Australian fees include GST.

GoHighLevel vs Gumroad true cost at A$2k, A$10k and A$30k a month

Here is the working, so you can swap in your own numbers. I have kept the assumptions deliberately simple and stated every one.

  • Average order value: A$50, so 40, 200 and 600 orders a month.
  • Exchange rate: A$1 = US$0.65, used for illustration only. Gumroad's fixed fee and GoHighLevel's plan are both priced in US dollars, so your real cost moves with the rate.
  • Cards: all domestic Australian cards, all direct sales (no Discover).
  • Gumroad processing: 2.9% + US$0.30, the figure third-party guides report. Check your own payout CSV, which itemises Gumroad's deductions.
  • GoHighLevel: Starter plan at US$97 (about A$149.23), Stripe at 1.65% + A$0.30.
  • Revenue is ex-GST. Tax handling is covered in the next section.

Per A$50 order on Gumroad: 10% (A$5.00) + US$0.50 (A$0.77) + 2.9% (A$1.45) + US$0.30 (A$0.46) = A$7.68 per order, or about 15.4%. Per A$50 order through GoHighLevel and Stripe: 1.65% (A$0.83) + A$0.30 = A$1.13, before the plan fee.

A$30,000600A$4,608.00A$149.23A$675.00A$824.23GHL saves A$3,783.77

The break-even point is low. Each order costs about A$6.55 more on Gumroad, so the US$97 plan pays for itself at roughly 23 orders, or around A$1,150 a month at a A$50 order value.

If even a fifth of those sales came through Discover at 30%, Gumroad's numbers would climb further. On the other side, GoHighLevel has usage costs (email sends, SMS, phone) and you may pay an accountant to handle tax that Gumroad handled for you. Neither changes the picture much at A$10k and above.

At A$10k a month, Gumroad's percentage costs more than four times what a flat HighLevel plan plus Stripe does. The question stops being "which is cheaper" and becomes "am I ready to handle my own tax?"

Tax handling: Gumroad's merchant-of-record advantage

This is where Gumroad genuinely earns part of its fee. Gumroad's pricing page says it has acted as merchant of record since 1 January 2025, collecting and remitting VAT, GST and sales tax worldwide.

For Australian buyers, Gumroad's help centre says it adds 10% GST on top of the price and remits it to the ATO, with an exemption for buyers who supply a valid ABN. You never file GST on those Gumroad sales yourself.

With GoHighLevel, you are the merchant. Stripe processes the card, but you decide whether prices include GST, register when your turnover requires it, and lodge your BAS. Selling digital products to overseas consumers can also create foreign tax obligations, so speak to your accountant before you switch.

In practice, most of our clients at A$10k+ a month are already GST-registered, so this "advantage" matters less than it first looks. For a hobby seller with overseas buyers, it can matter a lot.

Feature comparison: where HighLevel vs Gumroad really differ

Gumroad has grown well beyond a download link. Its help centre documents upsells at checkout, affiliates, tiered memberships, course-style products and automated email Workflows. The gap is in depth and in what happens after the sale.

The order form difference is the one that moves revenue fastest. A well-placed bump and one-click upsell on GoHighLevel order forms with upsells routinely lifts average order value, and there is no percentage skim on the extra sale.

Courses are the other big gap. If your product is turning into a program, the GoHighLevel memberships and courses setup gives you drip schedules, offers and community access tied directly to a payment.

The honest verdict: when Gumroad beats GoHighLevel, and when it doesn't

Stay on Gumroad if

  • You sell a tiny catalogue (one to five products) and revenue is under about A$1,000 a month.
  • You want someone else to be merchant of record and handle GST and overseas VAT entirely.
  • You don't need a CRM, pipelines or SMS follow-up, and buyers rarely become clients.
  • Gumroad Discover genuinely brings you new buyers you could not reach yourself.

Move to GoHighLevel if

  • You are past roughly A$1,500 a month and the percentage fee now exceeds a flat plan.
  • Your digital product is a front door to coaching, done-for-you services or a high-ticket program.
  • You want bumps, one-click upsells, courses, booking and email in one place on your own domain.
  • You are an agency that wants to resell the whole stack to clients through sub-accounts and snapshots.

For most Australian coaches and agencies, GoHighLevel wins once sales are steady, because the savings fund the accountant and the CRM turns buyers into repeat clients.

Migrating from Gumroad to GoHighLevel in seven steps

  1. Export your Gumroad customers as a CSV, including product purchased and purchase date.
  2. Connect Stripe in the sub-account's payment settings and run a live test transaction.
  3. Rebuild each product as a HighLevel product with its price, then attach it to an order form in a funnel.
  4. Rehost files and courses in Memberships, or deliver downloads via a Workflow email.
  5. Import contacts with tags such as "gumroad-buyer" and a custom field for the product owned, then grant course access by tag.
  6. Build the post-purchase Workflow using a payment-based trigger; our guide to the Payment Received trigger in GoHighLevel covers the filters to use.
  7. Handle memberships carefully. Active Gumroad subscriptions don't transfer automatically, so email members a new checkout link and only cancel on Gumroad once they have re-subscribed.

Keep your Gumroad links redirecting to the new pages for a few months. Old social posts and newsletters will keep sending buyers there.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Comparing Gumroad's 10% headline to Stripe's fee and forgetting Gumroad's processing and US$0.50 fixed fee.
  • Switching before checking your GST position, then discovering you now owe tax Gumroad used to remit.
  • Leaving products listed on Discover while driving your own traffic, and paying 30% on sales you generated.
  • Rebuilding products in GoHighLevel but skipping the post-purchase Workflow, so buyers never get access.
  • Cancelling Gumroad memberships before members have re-subscribed on the new checkout.
  • Ignoring exchange-rate movement when both Gumroad's fixed fee and the HighLevel plan are billed in US dollars.

Frequently asked questions

Is GoHighLevel cheaper than Gumroad?

Once you have steady sales, usually yes. Using a A$50 order value, the US$97 Starter plan plus Stripe fees costs less than Gumroad's 10% + US$0.50 plus processing from roughly 23 orders a month. At A$10k a month the gap in our worked example is over A$1,100.

What are Gumroad's fees in 2026?

Per Gumroad's pricing page in October 2026, direct sales cost 10% + US$0.50 per sale with no monthly fee, and Discover marketplace sales cost 30%. Gumroad's help centre says card processing and PayPal fees are not included in the 10%.

Does Gumroad handle GST for Australian sellers?

Yes. Gumroad acts as merchant of record, and its help centre says it adds 10% GST for Australian buyers and remits it to the ATO. Buyers with a valid ABN can claim an exemption.

Who handles GST when I sell through GoHighLevel?

You do. GoHighLevel and Stripe process the payment, but you are the merchant, so pricing, GST registration and BAS lodgement are your responsibility. Check overseas digital tax obligations with your accountant before switching.

Does GoHighLevel take a percentage of my sales?

No. HighLevel charges a flat monthly subscription and payments go through your own connected Stripe account. Stripe's Australian standard rate is 1.65% + A$0.30 for domestic cards, per its pricing page in October 2026.

Can I move my Gumroad customers into GoHighLevel?

Yes. Export your customers from Gumroad as a CSV, import them into GoHighLevel with tags and a custom field for the product owned, then grant course access by tag. Active subscriptions need to be re-created on a new checkout.

Is Gumroad Discover worth the 30% fee?

Only if it brings buyers you could not reach yourself. If most of your sales come from your own audience, the 30% rate on marketplace-attributed sales can quietly erode your margin.

Which is better for Australian coaches and agencies?

GoHighLevel, in most cases. Coaches and agencies need a CRM, booking, follow-up automation and upsells, which Gumroad doesn't offer at the same depth. Gumroad suits creators with a small catalogue who want tax handled for them.
