GoHighLevel vs Patreon is a question we hear more often now that Patreon has moved new creators onto a flat 10% platform fee. If you run a paid community, a coaching membership or a fan club, that percentage comes out of every dollar, every month, for as long as your members stay.

This guide compares the two on checkout and true cost. We'll lay out Patreon's current fee stack, what running memberships in HighLevel actually costs, a worked example at A$2,000 a month, and a practical migration outline for creators (and the agencies serving them) who decide to move.

What Patreon really charges in 2026

Patreon's fee stack has four layers, and most creators only budget for the first one. According to Patreon's creator fees overview, the layers are the platform fee, payment processing, currency conversion and payout fees.

  • Platform fee: 10% for creators who published their page after 4 August 2025. Patreon calculates it on the payment amount excluding sales tax.
  • Payment processing: charged separately. Patreon lists cards and Apple Pay at 2.9% + $0.30, with non-US PayPal and Venmo higher at 3.9% + $0.30, and different rates for other currencies.
  • Currency conversion: 2.5% on each payment when the member pays in a currency other than your payout currency.
  • Payout fees: these depend on method and country. Patreon's guide for creators outside the US describes a small flat fee per local bank transfer (around US$0.50 equivalent), with higher percentage-based fees for USD transfers and PayPal.

One trap is worth knowing about. Legacy creators can lose their old rate: Patreon says that if your page is unpublished, even temporarily, it moves to the 10% standard plan when it goes live again. Use Patreon's pause tool, not unpublish.

Why the "10%" is really 15% or more

On a A$10 membership, the 10% platform fee is A$1.00 and card processing at 2.9% + 30c is another 59c. That is roughly 16% gone before conversion or payout fees, because the fixed 30c weighs heavily on low-priced tiers.

What running memberships in GoHighLevel costs

HighLevel has no platform percentage on your sales. You pay a flat subscription, plus your payment processor's fees, plus any metered usage such as email and SMS.

Memberships, courses and Communities sit inside the sub-account, and checkout runs through Stripe connected in the Payments area. If you haven't connected it yet, our walkthrough on setting up Stripe subscriptions in GoHighLevel covers products, prices and recurring billing step by step.

  • Plan: Starter is US$97 a month, Unlimited US$297 and Agency Pro US$497, as reported across 2026 pricing reviews of the official HighLevel page. HighLevel's own Communities Builder page lists courses and memberships on the Starter tier.
  • Processing: Stripe's Australian pricing page lists domestic cards at 1.65% + A$0.30 and international cards at 3.5% + A$0.30, GST inclusive.
  • Usage: LeadConnector email, SMS and AI features are billed on top of the plan, so budget a little for your member emails.

For agencies the maths shifts again. If your creator client already has a sub-account for their funnels and CRM, the membership adds no extra plan cost at all.

Patreon's fee grows with every member you add. HighLevel's plan fee stays flat, so the bigger your community, the wider the gap.

GoHighLevel vs Patreon: a worked true-cost example

Here is a realistic Australian creator: 200 members paying A$10 a month, so A$2,000 gross. These are the assumptions, so you can swap in your own numbers.

  • All members pay in AUD and the creator's payout currency is AUD, so no 2.5% conversion fee applies on Patreon.
  • For Patreon processing we apply the listed 2.9% + 30c card rate in AUD terms. Patreon says rates vary by currency and method, so treat this as an estimate.
  • All HighLevel members pay with domestic Australian cards through Stripe at 1.65% + A$0.30.
  • The HighLevel Starter plan is US$97, converted at an assumed A$1 = US$0.65, which gives about A$149. Use your bank's rate on the day.
  • Payout fees, metered email costs and GST are excluded from both sides for clarity.
Monthly cost (200 x A$10)Patreon (new creator)GoHighLevel + Stripe
Platform feeA$200.00 (10%)A$0
Payment processingA$118.00 (200 x 59c)A$93.00 (200 x 46.5c)
Software subscriptionA$0~A$149 (Starter, assumed rate)
Total cost~A$318 (about 15.9%)~A$242 (about 12.1%)
You keep~A$1,682~A$1,758

At 200 members the saving is around A$76 a month. That is real, but not life-changing on its own, and it assumes you'd pay for HighLevel only for this membership.

Where the lines cross

Per member, Patreon costs about A$1.59 at this price point, while Stripe costs about 46.5c. The difference (roughly A$1.12 per member) covers the A$149 subscription at about 133 members. Below that, Patreon is cheaper on fees alone; above it, HighLevel pulls ahead.

At 500 members on the same assumptions, Patreon's cost rises to about A$795 a month, while HighLevel sits around A$382. If some of your members pay in USD or another currency, Patreon's 2.5% conversion fee widens the gap further, while Stripe's international card rate narrows it slightly. If you've already done this maths for a tip jar, our GoHighLevel vs Ko-fi cost breakdown uses the same method.

HighLevel vs Patreon: feature comparison

Fees are only half the decision. HighLevel vs Patreon is also a choice between a marketplace that brings some traffic and a system you fully control.

FeaturePatreonGoHighLevel
Audience discoverySome in-platform discovery and a recognised brand fans already trustNone built in; you drive your own traffic
Email list ownershipMember emails exportable as a CSV from the audience areaEvery member is a contact in your CRM from day one

Discovery is Patreon's genuine advantage. Many fans already have a Patreon login and saved card, which lowers friction at checkout. HighLevel wins on everything that happens after the sale: onboarding, nurture, upsells and win-backs.

Who should stay on Patreon and who should move

Stay on Patreon if

  • You have fewer than roughly 130 paying members at around A$10, and no other use for a CRM.
  • A large share of your members found you through Patreon itself.
  • You're on a legacy 5% or 8% plan, which changes the break-even point considerably.
  • You don't have the time (or an agency) to build and maintain your own stack.

Move to GoHighLevel if

  • You're past the break-even point and growing, especially on the 10% plan.
  • You also sell coaching, courses or events and want one CRM for everything.
  • You want automated onboarding, failed-payment follow-up and upsell sequences.
  • You're an agency that can bundle the membership into a client's existing sub-account.

A hybrid is also reasonable: keep a low-priced Patreon tier for discovery and run premium coaching or community tiers in HighLevel, where the margin and the follow-up matter most.

How to migrate from Patreon to HighLevel

Migration is about people, not files. Card details can't be moved out of Patreon, so every member will need to re-subscribe through your new checkout. Plan the move like a launch.

  1. Export your patrons. In Patreon's audience area, filter for active paid members and download the CSV. Import it into HighLevel with a tag such as patreon-migrating and a custom field for their old tier.
  2. Connect Stripe and build products. Create one recurring price per tier in AUD, and decide whether to honour existing prices for migrating members.
  3. Build the membership offers. Set up courses, Communities groups and offers that mirror your Patreon tiers. Our memberships and courses setup guide walks through offers and access.
  4. Create the welcome Workflow. Use a payment-based trigger to grant access, remove the migrating tag, add a member tag and send login details. See how the Payment Received trigger handles this.
  5. Run a migration campaign. Email migrating contacts over two to three weeks with a clear reason, a direct checkout link and a small thank-you bonus.
  6. Wind down Patreon gracefully. Post the move on Patreon, keep it running for one billing cycle, then pause rather than delete.

If your community is the main product, compare the Communities experience first. Our breakdown of HighLevel Communities against Circle shows what members will actually see.

A note on GST for Australian creators

Patreon calculates its platform fee on payments excluding sales tax, and it handles tax collection in some regions. When you sell directly through Stripe, the GST obligations sit with your business once you're registered. Talk to your accountant before you switch so pricing and invoices are set up correctly.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Comparing Patreon's 10% to Stripe's rate and forgetting Patreon's processing fees on top.
  • Unpublishing a legacy Patreon page and losing a lower legacy rate permanently.
  • Moving at 50 members, when the HighLevel subscription costs more than the fees you save.
  • Expecting patrons' cards to transfer automatically, rather than planning a re-subscribe campaign.
  • Launching memberships without a failed-payment Workflow, so involuntary churn quietly eats the savings.
  • Ignoring metered email and SMS usage when budgeting your HighLevel costs.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Patreon take from new creators in 2026?

Creators who published their page after 4 August 2025 are on Patreon's standard 10% platform fee. Payment processing is charged on top, listed at 2.9% plus 30 cents for card payments, and a 2.5% conversion fee applies when members pay in a different currency to your payout currency.

Is GoHighLevel cheaper than Patreon?

It depends on your member count. In our example at A$10 a month, HighLevel's Starter plan plus Stripe becomes cheaper than Patreon at roughly 130 members. Below that, Patreon usually costs less on fees alone.

Does GoHighLevel take a percentage of membership sales?

HighLevel charges a flat monthly subscription rather than a platform percentage. You still pay your payment processor, such as Stripe, plus any metered usage like email and SMS.

Can I move my Patreon members' payment details to HighLevel?

No. Patreon holds the payment relationship, so members need to re-subscribe through your new Stripe checkout. You can export member emails as a CSV and run a migration campaign from HighLevel.

Will I lose audience discovery if I leave Patreon?

Yes, some. Patreon has a recognised brand and fans who already hold accounts there. HighLevel has no marketplace, so you need your own traffic from social media, email, YouTube or podcasts.

What Stripe fees apply in Australia?

Stripe's Australian pricing page lists domestic cards at 1.65% plus A$0.30 and international cards at 3.5% plus A$0.30, GST inclusive. Check the page before you set prices, as Stripe updates its rates from time to time.

Can I run Patreon and HighLevel at the same time?

Yes. Many creators keep a low-priced Patreon tier for discovery and run premium coaching or community tiers in HighLevel. Tag Patreon members in your CRM so you can invite them to upgrade.
