GoHighLevel Voice AI is the feature I get asked about most in 2026, and it is also the one most people set up half-right. The pitch is simple: an AI agent answers your business phone, has a natural conversation, qualifies the caller, books them into a calendar and logs everything against the contact record — without a receptionist on payroll.
The reality is close to the pitch, provided you configure the agent properly, assign the right phone number, and understand how the per-minute billing works before your first invoice arrives. I run Voice AI across my own Australian sub-accounts and client accounts, so this guide covers the exact setup sequence, the pricing model as it stands today, and the compliance points that matter here in Australia. Note that Voice AI is the phone-call agent specifically — if you want the chat and SMS side, that is Conversation AI, which I cover separately.
What Voice AI actually does
Voice AI agents live under the AI Agents section of each sub-account. Once an agent is attached to a phone number, it can:
- Answer inbound calls in a natural synthetic voice, 24/7 or only outside business hours — your choice.
- Qualify callers against goals you define: service needed, suburb, budget, urgency, whatever fits your intake.
- Book appointments directly into your GHL calendars, respecting availability and buffers.
- Update contact records — it captures name, email and answers to your questions into custom fields, and applies tags you specify.
- Trigger Workflows after the call, so a booking confirmation SMS, a pipeline stage change or an internal notification fires automatically.
- Transfer live calls to a human when the caller asks for one or hits a condition you set.
Every call produces a transcript and summary in the Conversations tab, so you can audit what the agent said. That audit loop is how you improve the prompt over time — treat the first fortnight as training, not set-and-forget.
Voice AI vs Conversation AI vs AI Employee
HighLevel now ships several AI products and the naming trips people up constantly. The short version: Voice AI handles phone calls, Conversation AI handles text channels (SMS, web chat, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp), and AI Employee is the bundle that wraps both plus the content, funnel and review tools into one subscription. I have written full guides on the other two — see my Conversation AI guide and my AI Employee setup and pricing breakdown — so I will not rehash them here. The comparison below is the decision-making view:
| Feature | Voice AI | Conversation AI | AI Employee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Channel | Inbound phone calls | SMS, chat widget, social DMs | All of the above, bundled |
| Books calendar appointments | Yes, mid-call | Yes, via chat | Yes |
| Billing model | Per minute (~US$0.13–0.26) | Per message or bundled | ~US$97/mo unlimited per sub-account |
| Live transfer to human | Yes | Handoff to inbox | Yes |
| Best for | Missed calls, after-hours reception | Lead nurture in text channels | Heavy users of both |
Step-by-step setup
1. Create the agent
In your sub-account, go to AI Agents and create a new Voice AI agent. Give it a real name and pick a voice — test two or three, because callers respond noticeably better to some voices than others. Set the language to English (Australia) if available so pronunciation of suburbs and phone numbers sounds local.
2. Write the goals and prompt
This is where most of the quality lives. Define the agent’s business context (who you are, services, service area), then set explicit goals: greet, identify the caller’s need, collect name and mobile, offer a booking. Map each answer you collect to a custom field, and tell the agent which tags to apply — for example voice-ai-lead and service-electrical. Short, specific prompts beat long clever ones.
3. Assign a phone number
Attach the agent to a LeadConnector phone number (or your own Twilio number if you run a custom Twilio integration). You can point your existing business number at it via call forwarding, or use a dedicated number. For inbound-only reception work, a dedicated LeadConnector number with forwarding from your main line is the cleanest pattern.
4. Set business hours and answering rules
Decide when the agent answers: all calls, only unanswered calls after a ring timeout, or only outside business hours. The ring-timeout option is popular with trades — your team gets first crack at the call, and the agent only picks up what they miss.
5. Configure call transfer rules
Add a transfer number and the conditions that trigger it — typically “caller asks for a human” or “caller is an existing customer with a complaint”. Test the transfer path on a real handset, not just in your head.
6. Test, then connect Workflows
Ring the number yourself. Try to break it: mumble, interrupt, ask off-script questions, request a time the calendar cannot serve. Once it holds up, wire the post-call automation — a Workflow triggered on the call outcome or on the tag the agent applies can send confirmations, create an opportunity in your pipeline and notify your team. If you deploy across many clients, save the whole configuration into a snapshot so new sub-accounts inherit it.
Pricing: what it really costs
Voice AI is usage-billed. There is no separate licence fee on the standard plans — it is available on the US$97+ GoHighLevel plans and you pay per minute of AI talk time, drawn from your sub-account wallet. As at mid-2026 the effective rate sits at roughly US$0.13–0.26 per minute depending on your plan tier and whether you use rebilling with a markup for clients. Treat those figures as approximate and check the official GoHighLevel pricing page before you budget, because rates have moved more than once.
The alternative is the AI Employee bundle at about US$97 per month per sub-account, which where applicable includes unlimited Voice AI minutes along with Conversation AI and the other AI tools. The break-even maths is straightforward: at ~US$0.16/min, roughly 600 minutes a month of calls makes the bundle cheaper. A busy clinic reception line clears that easily; a tradie catching ten missed calls a week does not, and stays cheaper on usage billing. Telephony charges (the underlying Twilio/LeadConnector call cost) are billed separately and are small by comparison.
Australian considerations
Three things matter for Australian deployments. First, local numbers: LeadConnector provisions Australian numbers, and callers answer local numbers at far higher rates than they answer 1300 or overseas-looking numbers — use one. Second, compliance: while the US A2P 10DLC regime does not apply to Australian numbers, the ACMA rules on telemarketing, the Do Not Call Register and the Spam Act absolutely do, particularly for any outbound follow-up SMS your Workflows send after a call. Third, recording consent: call recording and transcription laws vary by state — several states require all-party consent — so have the agent disclose early in the greeting that the call may be recorded. It is one sentence in your prompt and it removes the legal ambiguity.
Practical use cases
Missed-call recovery for tradies
An electrician on the tools cannot answer the phone, and an unanswered call is usually a job lost to the next listing on Google. Voice AI answering after four rings, capturing the job details and booking a quote slot converts those calls instead of losing them. It pairs well with the SMS fallback I describe in my missed-call text-back setup guide — voice for callers who stay on the line, text for those who hang up.
After-hours reception for clinics
Allied health and dental clinics get a surprising share of booking calls between 6pm and 9pm. A Voice AI agent scoped to after-hours only, booking into the real appointment calendar with correct availability, means the front desk arrives to a full book rather than a voicemail queue. Keep clinical questions out of scope — the agent books and transfers, it does not advise.
Lead qualification for agencies
Agencies running lead-gen campaigns can put a Voice AI number on the ad, have the agent ask three qualifying questions, tag the contact by answer, and push qualified leads into a pipeline stage that alerts the sales team. The unqualified callers still get handled politely — they just do not consume a salesperson’s afternoon.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Launching without test calls. Ten real test calls, including deliberately awkward ones, before the number goes live. Every time.
- Prompts with no goals. A vague “be helpful” prompt produces waffle. Give the agent an explicit sequence: greet, qualify, collect, book.
- Forgetting the recording disclosure. In all-party-consent states this is a legal problem, not a style choice. Put it in the greeting.
- No transfer path. Some callers need a human. An agent with no escape hatch frustrates exactly the callers you most want to keep.
- Ignoring the wallet. Per-minute billing draws from your sub-account balance; set auto-recharge and a usage alert so the agent never goes silent mid-month.
- Letting the calendar drift. The agent books whatever the calendar says is free. Stale availability, missing buffers or an unassigned user turns good calls into bad bookings.

Frequently asked questions
How much does GoHighLevel Voice AI cost per minute?
Approximately US$0.13–0.26 per minute of AI talk time depending on your plan tier, billed from your sub-account wallet on the US$97+ plans. The AI Employee bundle at around US$97/month includes unlimited usage where applicable. Rates change, so verify on the official GoHighLevel pricing page before budgeting.
Does Voice AI work with Australian phone numbers?
Yes. You can provision Australian LeadConnector numbers or connect your own Twilio numbers, and forward your existing business line to the agent. Use a local number rather than an international-looking one — answer and callback rates are markedly better.
Can Voice AI book appointments directly into my calendar?
Yes. The agent reads live availability from your GHL calendars and books mid-call, respecting buffers and working hours. It then updates the contact record, applies tags and can trigger a Workflow to send confirmations.
What is the difference between Voice AI and Conversation AI?
Voice AI is the phone-call agent: it answers and speaks on real calls. Conversation AI is the text-channel agent for SMS, web chat and social DMs. They are configured separately, billed differently, and many businesses run both — often bundled via AI Employee.
Do I need to tell callers they are speaking to an AI?
Disclosure that the call may be recorded is required in Australian states with all-party consent rules, so include it in the greeting. Disclosing the AI itself is not uniformly mandated, but in my experience a brief, honest greeting performs fine and avoids the trust hit when callers work it out themselves.
