Quick verdict: GoHighLevel's Funnel & Website AI (the "Ask AI" build mode) is genuinely useful for getting a structured, on-brand first draft of a funnel or landing page in minutes — but it is a drafting tool, not a finished-page tool. Prompt it with your offer, audience and page structure, then expect to spend 20–40 minutes editing sections, wiring forms and connecting automations before anything goes live.

GoHighLevel Funnel AI — the "Ask AI" build mode inside the Funnels & Websites builder — is one of those features people either dismiss after one lazy prompt or quietly use to cut hours off every build. I sit firmly in the second camp, but only because I stopped treating it like magic and started treating it like a junior designer who needs a proper brief.

In this guide I'll cover what Funnel AI actually does, how to prompt it so the first draft is usable, how to edit its output, and when a template or snapshot is honestly the better call. Everything here is based on builds we run daily across Australian client sub-accounts at HL Growth Partner.

What is GoHighLevel Funnel AI and where does Ask AI live?

Funnel & Website AI is HighLevel's prompt-to-page builder. Instead of dragging sections onto a blank canvas, you describe the page — the business, the offer, the audience, the sections you want — and Ask AI generates a draft page assembled from the same rows, columns and elements you'd use manually.

You'll find it when creating a new funnel or website inside a sub-account, where HighLevel offers the AI-assisted path alongside blank builds and the template library. The output is a normal, fully editable page — that's the part people miss. There's no locked "AI page" format; once generated, it behaves exactly like anything you built by hand.

It sits within HighLevel's broader AI stack, alongside Content AI for copy and images, Conversation AI for chat, and AI Studio for agents. If you're mapping the whole ecosystem, my AI Studio setup and pricing guide covers where each piece fits and what it costs.

How HighLevel Ask AI actually builds a page

The flow is straightforward: you give Ask AI a prompt describing the page, it asks for or infers details like business name and colour preferences, then it generates a structured draft — typically a hero, benefits, social proof, offer and CTA sections. You can regenerate, tweak the prompt, or accept and move into the standard editor.

What it's really doing is making three decisions for you: page structure (which sections, in what order), copy (headlines and body text for each section), and styling (colours, fonts, spacing). Structure is where it earns its keep. A sensible section order out of the box saves more time than any individual headline it writes.

Copy quality is serviceable rather than sharp — expect generic phrasing until you feed it specifics. And note that Ask AI builds pages, not systems: your form still needs to connect to a Workflow, your thank-you page still needs wiring, and your tracking still needs installing. When a form submission doesn't fire the automation you expected, that's a builder-to-Workflow connection issue — my workflow troubleshooting guide walks through the usual culprits.

Prompt recipes that get better pages out of Funnel AI

The difference between a throwaway draft and a near-usable page is almost entirely the prompt. Vague in, vague out. Every good Funnel AI prompt I write contains the same five ingredients:

  • Who: the business, its location, and the exact audience the page speaks to
  • Offer: the specific thing being sold or given away, with the price or "free"
  • Structure: the sections you want, named and ordered
  • Tone: two or three adjectives plus anything to avoid
  • Action: the one thing a visitor should do (book, opt in, buy)

Recipe 1: Lead magnet opt-in page

"Build a single opt-in landing page for [business], a physiotherapy clinic in Brisbane targeting office workers with back pain. Offer: a free PDF, '5 Desk Stretches That Actually Work'. Sections: hero with headline and opt-in form (name, email), 3-bullet benefits, short credibility section about the physio, one testimonial, final CTA. Tone: warm, practical, no medical jargon. Goal: email opt-in."

Recipe 2: Booking funnel for a service business

"Build a two-step booking funnel page for [business], a mortgage broker in Melbourne targeting first-home buyers. Offer: free 20-minute strategy call. Sections: hero with pain-point headline, 'how it works' in 3 steps, broker bio with credentials, FAQ with 4 questions, CTA to book. Tone: reassuring, plain-English, compliant — no guarantees about approval. Goal: calendar booking."

Recipe 3: Paid workshop sales page

"Build a long-form sales page for a $49 live online workshop teaching cafe owners to automate Google review requests. Sections: hero, problem agitation, what's covered (5 bullets), who it's for / not for, presenter bio, price with money-back guarantee, urgency section, FAQ. Tone: direct, energetic, Australian. Goal: checkout click."

One recipe per page, always. Prompting an entire multi-step funnel in one go produces mush; prompt each step separately, then link them in the funnel settings. And once the draft exists, swap hard-coded business details for custom values so the page stays maintainable across rebrands and snapshot deployments.

Ask AI doesn't reward clever prompts — it rewards complete ones. Give it the offer, the audience and the section list, and it stops guessing.

Editing the AI output before you publish

Here's my standard edit pass after Ask AI generates a page, in order. First, headlines: rewrite the hero headline yourself, because it's the highest-leverage 10 words on the page and the AI's version is rarely specific enough. If you want AI help here, Content AI inside the editor can iterate headline variants faster than regenerating the whole page.

Second, proof: replace placeholder testimonials and stock-style imagery with real client words and real photos. Third, forms: check every field, connect the form to a Workflow with the correct trigger, and test the submission end to end. Fourth, mobile: always review the mobile view separately — AI-generated sections that look balanced on desktop often need padding and font-size adjustments on mobile.

Finally, the plumbing the AI never touches: domain, SEO meta title and description, tracking scripts, and the thank-you or next-step page. Budget 20–40 minutes for this pass on a simple page. If you're doing this for clients, that edit time is billable — see my breakdown of what agencies should charge for funnel builds before you quote AI-assisted work too cheaply.

Ask AI vs templates vs snapshots: which build path wins?

Ask AI is one of three ways to start a funnel in HighLevel, and picking the wrong one wastes hours. Templates give you a proven layout with dummy content; snapshots give you an entire pre-built system — funnels plus Workflows, pipelines, calendars and emails — deployed into a sub-account. If snapshots are new to you, start with my guide to creating and loading snapshots.

FactorAsk AI buildTemplatesSnapshots
Speed to first draftMinutesMinutesMinutes (but covers the whole system)
Copy includedYes — drafted for your offerDummy text you replaceWhatever the snapshot author wrote
Automations includedNoNoYes — Workflows, pipelines, calendars
Best forNovel offers with no existing assetStandard pages where layout matters mostRepeatable niches and client onboarding at scale
Skill requiredPrompting + editingBasic builder skillsSub-account and snapshot management

My rule of thumb: one-off page for a unique offer, use Ask AI; tenth client in the same niche, use a snapshot. Agencies often combine them — Ask AI drafts the first version, you refine it, then you bake the winner into a snapshot so you never prompt for that niche again.

Limitations of HighLevel Ask AI to plan around

Being honest about the edges saves disappointment. Ask AI won't build multi-step logic — order bumps, upsell sequencing and split tests are still manual configuration. It doesn't wire automations, so every form and button needs connecting to Workflows, calendars or payments after generation.

Design-wise, output leans safe and same-y; distinctive brand work still needs a human pass on typography, imagery and spacing. Copy can drift generic or occasionally overclaim, which matters in regulated Australian niches — finance, health, legal — where you must edit for compliance before publishing. And AI features in HighLevel are billed and packaged in ways that change often, so check current inclusions on the official pricing page at gohighlevel.com/pricing and the HighLevel help docs rather than trusting screenshots from six months ago.

None of these are reasons to skip the tool. They're reasons to treat it as the first 60% of a build — the structural drudgery — while you supply the judgement, the proof and the plumbing.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • One-line prompts. "Build me a landing page for my gym" produces a generic draft you'll rebuild anyway — always include offer, audience, sections and tone.
  • Publishing without wiring. A beautiful page whose form isn't connected to a Workflow trigger captures nothing; test the full submission path before sending traffic.
  • Skipping the mobile pass. Most of your traffic is mobile, and AI-generated spacing frequently breaks on small screens.
  • Leaving AI placeholder proof live. Invented-sounding testimonials and stock claims erode trust and can create compliance risk — replace them with real ones.
  • Prompting a whole funnel in one message. Generate page by page, then assemble the steps in funnel settings.
  • Using Ask AI for the tenth identical client build. That's snapshot territory — you're paying in edit time for consistency a snapshot gives you free.

Frequently asked questions

Is GoHighLevel Funnel AI free, or does it cost extra?

Access to the Funnels & Websites builder is included in standard HighLevel plans, and the Ask AI build mode is offered within it. Some HighLevel AI features draw on AI credit or AI Employee billing depending on your account's settings and current packaging. Check your sub-account's billing settings and the official pricing page before assuming usage is unlimited.

Which plans include the Ask AI build mode?

Funnel and website building is available across HighLevel's standard tiers, from the Starter plan upward, and the AI build option appears in the builder rather than being gated to a specific top tier. Packaging of AI features has changed several times, so verify current inclusions in the HighLevel help docs for your plan. Agency users can generally use it in any sub-account they manage.

Can Ask AI build a full multi-step funnel or just single pages?

Treat it as a page-level tool. It generates strong single pages from a prompt, but multi-step sequencing — order forms, upsells, thank-you paths — is configured manually in the funnel settings afterwards. The reliable workflow is one prompt per page, then assemble the steps yourself.

Can I edit the pages Ask AI creates?

Yes, completely. The output is made of the same rows, columns and elements as a hand-built page, so you can restyle, rewrite, add or delete anything in the standard editor. There is no locked AI format — regeneration is optional, not required.

Does Ask AI connect my forms and automations automatically?

No. It places form elements on the page, but connecting submissions to Workflows, tagging contacts, sending notifications and routing to calendars is manual configuration you do after generation. Always run a live test submission before launching traffic to the page.

Is Ask AI better than starting from a template?

They solve different problems. Templates give you a proven layout with dummy copy; Ask AI gives you a layout plus first-draft copy tailored to the offer you described. For a unique offer with no existing asset, Ask AI is usually faster; for a standard page type where you already have copy, a template can be quicker to polish.

Can I use Funnel AI on client sub-accounts as an agency?

Yes — the AI build mode works inside sub-accounts, so you can generate first drafts for clients directly in their location. Just confirm how AI usage is billed at agency versus sub-account level in your settings, and consider baking refined results into a snapshot for repeat niches rather than re-prompting every time.
