GoHighLevel vs Klaviyo: Email, SMS & Cost (2026)

The GoHighLevel vs Klaviyo decision usually comes down to one question: are you selling products or selling appointments? Klaviyo is an ecommerce marketing platform built around product, order and browsing data, and it is genuinely excellent at that job. GoHighLevel is an all-in-one CRM with funnels, calendars, pipelines, two-way SMS and voice, and email — sold at a flat monthly fee with unlimited contacts. If your revenue comes from a Shopify or BigCommerce catalogue, Klaviyo will almost always out-perform HighLevel on segmentation and revenue attribution. If your revenue comes from booked calls, quotes and follow-up, GoHighLevel replaces four or five tools at once and Klaviyo cannot touch it.

I run both for different clients, and I have migrated businesses in each direction. What follows is the honest version: where each platform is strong, where each one hurts, what the true monthly cost looks like at 5,000 and 25,000 contacts in Australian dollars, and the specific situations where running both side by side is the correct answer rather than a cop-out. I have kept the pricing discussion grounded in published USD list prices rather than invented figures, because both vendors adjust tiers regularly and a blog post is a poor substitute for the live pricing page.

Who each platform is actually for

Klaviyo's natural home

Klaviyo was built for direct-to-consumer ecommerce and it shows in every design decision. It ingests your product catalogue, order history, browse and cart events, and then lets you segment on things like "purchased category X in the last 90 days, has not purchased since, predicted next order date within 14 days". That product-level segmentation is not a bolt-on; it is the core data model. If you sell physical goods online, run replenishment cycles, or need revenue attributed to individual flows and campaigns, Klaviyo does this natively and does it well.

Klaviyo also brings genuinely useful predictive analytics — expected customer lifetime value, churn risk, predicted next order date — and a mature deliverability toolkit with sending-reputation monitoring, list-cleaning suggestions and automated sunset flows. Their support team will actively intervene if your engagement metrics slide. For a store doing serious volume, that is worth paying for.

GoHighLevel's natural home

GoHighLevel is a CRM first and an email tool second. Its centre of gravity is the pipeline: a lead arrives via a funnel or form, lands in a conversation thread that carries email, SMS, Facebook and Instagram DMs, WhatsApp and calls in one view, gets booked into a calendar, and moves through opportunity stages. Conversation AI can handle the first-response and booking conversation without a human. Workflows can trigger on appointment status, pipeline stage, call outcome or form field — triggers that simply do not exist in an ecommerce email platform.

The commercial model is the other half of the story. HighLevel charges one flat fee with unlimited contacts, unlimited users and (on the higher plans) unlimited sub-accounts. For agencies, coaches, clinics, trades and any service business with a big list and modest send volume, that flat fee is structurally cheaper than a per-contact platform. If you are weighing this up against other contenders, my GoHighLevel vs ActiveCampaign comparison covers the same trade-off from the automation-depth angle.

Email builder and deliverability

The builders

Klaviyo's email editor is the better product. Dynamic product blocks pull live catalogue data, so a single template can render personalised recommendations per recipient. Universal content blocks update across templates. The preview and rendering tests are solid, and the template library is written by people who understand ecommerce email.

GoHighLevel's builder has improved substantially and is now perfectly capable for service-business email — drag-and-drop sections, saved template elements, custom values, conditional content and a decent HTML import path. It is not going to render a live product grid off a Shopify feed without help. If you are new to it, my GoHighLevel email builder walkthrough covers the parts that are not obvious, including custom values and reusable sections.

Sending infrastructure

This is the difference people underestimate. Klaviyo runs its own sending infrastructure with shared and dedicated IP options, automatic warm-up, and reputation management handled on their side. You are buying a managed outcome.

GoHighLevel sends through Mailgun, and you configure it. That means your own domain authentication, your own SPF, DKIM and DMARC records, your own dedicated IP decision and your own warm-up schedule. The upside is control and much cheaper volume pricing. The downside is that a careless setup produces bad inbox placement and HighLevel will not save you from yourself. Get this right before you send anything meaningful — the email deliverability and Mailgun setup process is not difficult, but it is not optional either. Post-2024 bulk-sender rules from Google and Yahoo mean DMARC and one-click unsubscribe are hard requirements on both platforms.

SMS and Australian compliance

How each one bills SMS

Klaviyo sells SMS as a separate credit-based add-on layered on top of your email plan, with credits consumed per message segment and rates varying by destination country. Australian SMS pricing sits above US rates, and multi-segment messages burn credits fast. It is clean and predictable, but you are buying at Klaviyo's margin.

GoHighLevel resells Twilio (via LeadConnector) at close to wholesale with a rebilling markup you control. You top up a wallet and pay per segment. For agencies this is a revenue line, not just a cost: you can mark up client SMS and voice. For a single business it usually means cheaper SMS than a credit-pack model, particularly at volume.

The compliance work

Neither platform lets you skip registration. If you send to US numbers you need A2P 10DLC brand and campaign registration, and rejections are common when the sample messages and opt-in evidence do not match the hosted opt-in page. Walk through A2P 10DLC registration properly the first time rather than resubmitting three times.

For Australian sending, the Spam Act 2003 and the ACMA rules apply: you need consent, accurate sender identification, and a functional unsubscribe in every commercial message. Alphanumeric sender IDs are available here but cannot receive replies, which breaks two-way conversation — for anything conversational use a dedicated Australian long number or mobile number. This applies identically to both platforms; the difference is that HighLevel is built around two-way SMS conversations, while Klaviyo SMS is primarily broadcast and flow-driven.

Automation depth and ecommerce data

Triggers and branching

Klaviyo flows are triggered by metrics — placed order, viewed product, started checkout, refunded, custom events pushed via API. Conditional splits, A/B splits inside flows, time delays and smart send-time optimisation are all there. Within the ecommerce event universe, it is deep and reliable.

GoHighLevel workflows trigger on a far wider surface: form and survey submissions, appointment booked, confirmed, no-showed or cancelled, opportunity stage changes, call status and duration, inbound SMS keywords, tag changes, invoice paid, membership activity, and inbound webhooks. Actions include internal notifications, task assignment, pipeline moves, Slack and webhook calls, AI-generated replies and math operations on custom fields. If your automation needs to touch sales operations rather than just messaging, HighLevel has more surface area.

Store integrations

Klaviyo's Shopify and BigCommerce integrations are one-click and complete — catalogue sync, historical order backfill, onsite tracking, back-in-stock, and a Shopify-native checkout consent capture. WooCommerce and Magento are well supported too.

GoHighLevel has a native store, cart and payments layer with Stripe, and an official Shopify integration that syncs orders and contacts, but the data depth is not comparable. You will not get browse abandonment or predictive lifetime value out of the box. If you are considering selling through HighLevel directly, the GoHighLevel ecommerce store setup and fees breakdown is worth reading before you commit — it works well for digital products, courses and simple physical catalogues, less well for a 2,000-SKU store.

GoHighLevel vs Klaviyo: true monthly cost compared

GoHighLevel publishes flat USD list prices: Starter at US$97/mo, Unlimited at US$297/mo and Pro/SaaS at US$497/mo. All three include unlimited contacts. Klaviyo prices on the number of active profiles in your account, with email sends bundled into that tier and SMS credits purchased separately — so your bill moves as your list grows. I have deliberately not invented 2026 Klaviyo tier figures; check Klaviyo's pricing page and GoHighLevel's pricing page for current numbers, and remember both are billed in USD, so your actual AUD cost depends on the exchange rate and your card's foreign transaction fee.

Conversions below use roughly AUD 1.52 per USD, which is illustrative only. Add GST treatment and your bank's currency margin on top.

The pattern is straightforward. At 5,000 contacts with a modest send volume, Klaviyo's email-only cost can undercut HighLevel's Starter plan. At 25,000 contacts, HighLevel's flat fee does not move while Klaviyo's does, and the gap widens further if you are running multiple brands. But that comparison is only fair if you are comparing email against email. Once you add up the funnel builder, scheduler, CRM, phone system and website hosting that HighLevel absorbs, the real comparison is Klaviyo plus four other subscriptions. For a full breakdown of which HighLevel tier suits which business, see GoHighLevel pricing plans explained.

Reporting and attribution

Klaviyo reports in revenue. Every flow and campaign carries attributed revenue, revenue per recipient, and a benchmark against similar stores. Cohort retention tables and product performance views are built in. If your board asks what email contributed to last quarter, Klaviyo answers in one screen.

GoHighLevel reports in pipeline. You get attribution reporting on lead source, opportunity value by stage, appointment show rates, call outcomes, agent performance and campaign-level email and SMS stats. For a service business tracking cost per booked call and close rate, that is the more relevant lens. What HighLevel does not do well is product-level revenue analysis — if that is your key metric, you will be exporting data or bolting on a BI tool.

Migration considerations

Moving to GoHighLevel from Klaviyo

Contacts, tags and custom properties export cleanly as CSV. What does not transfer is your flow logic, your product-level segments and your sending reputation. Rebuild flows deliberately rather than trying to replicate them one for one — HighLevel's trigger model is different enough that a straight copy produces awkward automations. Budget two to four weeks of domain warm-up before you send to the full list, and start with your most engaged 20 per cent.

Moving to Klaviyo from GoHighLevel

Easier on the data side if you have a supported store, because Klaviyo backfills order history on connection. Harder on the operational side: you will need to replace calendars, pipelines, forms, funnels and SMS conversations with separate tools, and those subscriptions add up quickly. Map the replacement stack and its total cost before you make the call.

Running both

This is a legitimate architecture and I set it up regularly. Klaviyo owns the storefront relationship — abandoned cart, post-purchase, replenishment, win-back — because it has the product data. GoHighLevel owns the human sales motion: high-value enquiries, consultations, quotes, bookings, phone follow-up and the agency or wholesale side of the business. Sync the two with a webhook or an automation platform on the identifiers that matter, agree which system is the source of truth for consent and unsubscribes, and honour a global suppression list across both. Do not let both platforms email the same person on the same day without a rule governing it.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Comparing HighLevel's flat fee to Klaviyo's email fee alone, then being surprised by the four other subscriptions you still need for funnels, calendars, phone and hosting.
  • Migrating to GoHighLevel and sending to a full 25,000-contact list on day one without warming the domain — the fastest way to torch deliverability that took years to build.
  • Assuming HighLevel's Shopify integration gives you Klaviyo-grade segmentation. It syncs orders; it does not model browsing behaviour or predict lifetime value.
  • Budgeting SMS as "included". On both platforms it is metered — Twilio wallet top-ups on HighLevel, credit packs on Klaviyo — and Australian rates are higher than the US rates quoted in most marketing material.
  • Ignoring A2P 10DLC or ACMA obligations until messages start failing. Register first, and use a real Australian number if you want replies.
  • Running both platforms without a single source of truth for consent, so an unsubscribe in one system keeps receiving mail from the other. That is a compliance problem, not just an annoyance.
  • Choosing on price alone when the deciding factor should be whether your revenue comes from a product catalogue or a sales conversation.

Frequently asked questions

Is GoHighLevel vs Klaviyo really a fair comparison?

Only partly. They overlap on email and SMS marketing, and that overlap is where most people compare them. Beyond that they are different categories: Klaviyo is an ecommerce marketing platform with deep product data, and GoHighLevel is an all-in-one CRM with funnels, calendars, pipelines and a phone system. The fair comparison is Klaviyo plus your CRM, scheduler and funnel builder against GoHighLevel on its own.

Which has better email deliverability?

Klaviyo, out of the box, because it manages the sending infrastructure, IP warm-up and reputation for you. HighLevel sends via Mailgun and puts that responsibility on you. A properly configured HighLevel account with authenticated domains, a warmed IP and disciplined list hygiene can match Klaviyo's inbox placement — but it will not do it by accident.

Can GoHighLevel replace Klaviyo for a Shopify store?

For a small store with a simple catalogue and straightforward flows, often yes, and you save on the other tools. For a store where revenue depends on product-level segmentation, browse abandonment, back-in-stock alerts and predictive lifetime value, no — you will feel the gap within a month. Many stores keep Klaviyo for the storefront and use HighLevel for the sales and service side.

Is HighLevel vs Klaviyo different for an agency?

Considerably. GoHighLevel's Unlimited and Pro plans include unlimited sub-accounts, so one flat fee covers every client, and the Pro/SaaS plan lets you resell the platform under your own brand with your own pricing. Klaviyo bills each brand as a separate account, which makes multi-client management expensive. For agencies this is usually the deciding factor.

What will I actually pay in Australian dollars?

Both vendors bill in USD, so your AUD cost moves with the exchange rate and your card's foreign transaction fee. GoHighLevel's list prices are US$97, US$297 and US$497 per month — roughly A$147, A$451 and A$755 at an illustrative 1.52 rate — plus metered email and SMS usage. Klaviyo depends on your active profile count and SMS credit purchases. Check both pricing pages for current figures before you budget.
