GoHighLevel vs ActiveCampaign: Features & True Cost (2026)

Quick verdict: Choose ActiveCampaign if email marketing is the core of your business and you want the deepest send-time, segmentation and deliverability tooling available at a modest contact count. Choose GoHighLevel if you need email plus CRM, pipelines, funnels, SMS, calling and calendars in one flat-fee platform, or if you run an agency and want sub-accounts and snapshots. Most agencies and local service businesses I work with end up on GoHighLevel; most pure email-first solo operators are better served by ActiveCampaign.

The GoHighLevel vs ActiveCampaign decision is one I get asked about weekly, usually by someone who has outgrown a basic email tool and is trying to work out whether they need a marketing automation platform or a full sales-and-marketing system. The two products get compared constantly, but they are built on different assumptions. ActiveCampaign assumes email is the centre of your world and everything else connects to it. GoHighLevel assumes you want the whole stack — CRM, funnels, calendars, SMS, phone, email — under one login and one invoice.

I have administered both platforms for Australian clients. This comparison covers the features that matter in day-to-day use, the pricing of both as at 2026, and the true-cost question that catches most buyers out — because the sticker price and the twelve-month cost are rarely the same number.

Who each platform is for

ActiveCampaign is a marketing automation platform with a light CRM attached. Its strengths are email: visual automations, granular segmentation, predictive sending, site tracking and a mature deliverability reputation. It suits solo consultants, course creators, e-commerce brands and content-led businesses whose revenue depends on well-timed, well-segmented email.

GoHighLevel is an all-in-one sales and marketing system originally built for agencies. It bundles a CRM with pipelines, a funnel and website builder, two-way SMS and calling through LeadConnector (built on Twilio), email through Mailgun or your own SMTP, booking calendars, reputation management, Workflows for automation, and Conversation AI for handling inbound messages. On the Agency plans you get sub-accounts — separate client workspaces you can provision in minutes from snapshots — and on the top tier, SaaS Mode lets you resell the platform under your own brand. If you searched "HighLevel vs ActiveCampaign" trying to work out whether they are even the same category of tool, the honest answer is: not really. One is a specialist, one is a consolidated stack.

Feature-by-feature comparison

Email automation depth

ActiveCampaign wins on pure email sophistication. Its automation builder handles split paths, goals that pull contacts forward when conditions are met, win-probability scoring and predictive send times. Segmentation on behavioural data — link clicks, site visits, purchase history — is more refined than anything GoHighLevel offers natively.

GoHighLevel's Workflows are broader but shallower on email specifically. Triggers can fire from form submissions, pipeline stage changes, missed calls, calendar bookings, tag changes or inbound SMS, and a single Workflow can send email and SMS, assign tasks, update custom fields and move an opportunity. For most service businesses that breadth matters more than predictive sending; if your business lives and dies on email nuance, ActiveCampaign is the stronger engine. GoHighLevel sends through Mailgun by default, and deliverability depends heavily on correct domain setup — covered in my guide to GoHighLevel email deliverability and Mailgun.

CRM and pipelines

GoHighLevel's CRM is a genuine operational tool: unlimited pipelines with drag-and-drop stages, opportunities tied to contacts, custom fields and tags throughout, and Workflow triggers on any stage movement. ActiveCampaign's Deals CRM exists and works, but it is clearly secondary to the email product — pipeline automation is thinner and most serious users pair ActiveCampaign with a separate CRM, which adds cost and sync complexity.

Funnels and websites

This one is not close. GoHighLevel includes a full funnel and website builder with templates, order forms, one-click upsells and membership areas. ActiveCampaign offers landing pages on higher tiers, but nobody builds their web presence on them. If you currently pay for a separate funnel builder, GoHighLevel absorbs that cost entirely.

SMS and calling

GoHighLevel ships with two-way SMS, a dialler, call tracking, call recording and missed-call text-back through LeadConnector, with usage billed at Twilio-based rates. Australian numbers work, though SMS sender ID registration rules apply here and need to be set up properly. ActiveCampaign supports one-way SMS on paid add-ons and otherwise relies on integrations. For any business where speed-to-lead matters — trades, clinics, real estate — this is usually the deciding feature.

AI features

GoHighLevel's Conversation AI can hold SMS and web-chat conversations, answer questions from your business information and book appointments into calendars, billed per message or via an unlimited add-on. It also offers AI-generated funnel copy and Content AI for emails and posts. ActiveCampaign's AI sits inside the email workflow: generative subject lines and body copy, predictive sending and automation-building assistance. Both are useful; GoHighLevel's is customer-facing, ActiveCampaign's is marketer-facing.

Reporting

ActiveCampaign gives you deep email analytics — engagement over time, automation performance, revenue attribution on commerce plans. GoHighLevel's dashboards cover the wider funnel: lead sources, pipeline value by stage, appointment show rates, call reporting and advertising attribution. Agencies can white-label these reports per sub-account, which is something ActiveCampaign has no equivalent for.

Integrations

ActiveCampaign has the larger native marketplace — 900-plus integrations, with tight Shopify and WooCommerce connections. GoHighLevel integrates natively with Stripe, Google, Facebook and QuickBooks, and covers the rest through webhooks, its API, Zapier and Make. In practice GoHighLevel needs fewer integrations because more is built in.

Pricing compared, as at 2026

All figures are in USD and approximate as at 2026 — always confirm against the official pages at gohighlevel.com/pricing and activecampaign.com/pricing. The structural difference matters more than the exact figures: ActiveCampaign prices per contact and per tier, GoHighLevel charges a flat platform fee plus usage.

PlanActiveCampaign (approx., at 1,000 contacts)GoHighLevel (flat, unlimited contacts)
EntryStarter — roughly $15–19/mo; basic automation, 1 userStarter — $97/mo; full platform, up to 3 sub-accounts
MidPlus — roughly $49–79/mo; CRM, landing pages, more usersUnlimited — $297/mo; unlimited sub-accounts, API access, branded desktop app
UpperPro — roughly $79–149/mo; predictive sending, attributionAgency Pro — $497/mo; SaaS Mode, rebilling, advanced white-label
TopEnterprise — roughly $145–259/mo; custom objects, SSO, dedicated support— (Agency Pro is the top tier)
Scaling driverContact count — 10,000 contacts can push Plus/Pro to $186–$319+/moUsage — email via Mailgun, SMS/calls via LeadConnector/Twilio, AI credits

I have broken down what each GoHighLevel tier actually includes, and which one suits which business, in my full explainer on GoHighLevel pricing plans.

The true-cost angle: per-contact creep vs flat fee plus usage

ActiveCampaign's per-contact model looks cheap at 1,000 contacts and stops looking cheap around 10,000. A Plus plan that starts near $49 a month can quietly become $200-plus as your list grows — including unengaged contacts unless you prune them. I call this per-contact creep: the platform gets dearer precisely because your marketing is working. Add a separate funnel builder, scheduler and SMS service, and the "cheaper" option often lands at $250–$400 a month all-in.

GoHighLevel inverts the model. The $97 or $297 is flat regardless of list size, but usage is metered: email through Mailgun at fractions of a cent per send, SMS and calls at Twilio-based rates, and credits for Conversation AI. A local business sending 20,000 emails and 2,000 SMS a month might add $40–$80 in usage. The catch is that usage needs monitoring — I have seen agencies surprised by SMS bills because a Workflow was firing more often than intended. Budget honestly for both: flat fee plus realistic usage on one side, tier price at your projected contact count in twelve months on the other.

Migration considerations

Moving between these platforms is very doable, but plan for three things.

Data mapping. Contacts, tags and custom fields export cleanly from either side via CSV. ActiveCampaign's automations, however, do not translate one-to-one into GoHighLevel Workflows (or vice versa) — you rebuild them, and that rebuild is your opportunity to prune automations nobody has reviewed in two years. Map every custom field before importing, because fixing field mismatches after 15,000 contacts have landed is tedious.

Deliverability warm-up. Your sending reputation does not migrate with you. Whichever direction you move, set up your dedicated sending domain (Mailgun on the GoHighLevel side), authenticate SPF, DKIM and DMARC, and ramp volume gradually over two to four weeks. Sending your full list from a cold domain on day one is the single most common migration self-inflicted wound.

Sequencing. Run both platforms in parallel for a billing cycle. Move new leads first, then active sequences, then the archive, and never cancel the old subscription until automations are verified. It is the same playbook I recommend when clients move off HubSpot — the comparison side of that decision is written up in GoHighLevel vs HubSpot.

Verdict by business type

Solo consultant or coach

If your model is content, list-building and email nurture, ActiveCampaign Starter or Plus is simpler and cheaper at small list sizes, and its email tooling is better. If you also need booking calendars, a funnel for your offer and SMS reminders to cut no-shows, GoHighLevel at $97 replaces three or four subscriptions and usually wins on total cost within the first year.

Marketing agency

GoHighLevel, without much hesitation. Sub-accounts, snapshots for instant client onboarding, white-label reporting and SaaS Mode for productising your service have no ActiveCampaign equivalent. Managing ten clients on ActiveCampaign means ten separate accounts and ten separate bills; on GoHighLevel's $297 Unlimited plan it is one platform fee.

Local service business

GoHighLevel. Missed-call text-back, two-way SMS, review requests, pipelines and calendars matter more to a plumber, dentist or gym than predictive email sending ever will. Speed-to-lead is the metric that moves revenue for local businesses, and it is exactly what the platform is built around.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Comparing sticker prices at today's list size. Price ActiveCampaign at the contact count you expect in twelve months, and GoHighLevel with realistic Mailgun and Twilio usage — not at zero.
  • Assuming automations migrate. They do not. Budget rebuild time for every sequence, and use the rebuild to cull dead automations rather than copying clutter across.
  • Skipping domain authentication after migrating. Moving platforms without configuring SPF, DKIM, DMARC and a warmed sending domain torches deliverability for weeks.
  • Buying GoHighLevel for email-only use. If you will genuinely never use the CRM, funnels, calendars or SMS, you are paying flat-fee prices for one-tenth of the product — ActiveCampaign serves that use case better.
  • Ignoring per-contact creep on ActiveCampaign. Unengaged subscribers cost real money every month; without a regular list-hygiene automation, you are paying to store dead weight.
  • Cancelling the old platform before verification. Keep both live for at least one billing cycle and confirm triggers, tags and reporting match before you pull the pin.

Frequently asked questions

Is GoHighLevel cheaper than ActiveCampaign?

It depends on list size and stack. Under roughly 2,500 contacts with email-only needs, ActiveCampaign is usually cheaper. Beyond 10,000 contacts, or once you add a funnel builder, scheduler and SMS tool to ActiveCampaign, GoHighLevel's flat $97–$297 USD plus usage is generally the lower total cost.

Can GoHighLevel replace ActiveCampaign completely?

For most service businesses, yes — Workflows, campaigns, custom fields and tags cover standard nurture and broadcast needs. Businesses relying on ActiveCampaign's predictive sending, deep e-commerce integrations or advanced behavioural segmentation will notice the gap and should test their specific use cases during a trial first.

Does ActiveCampaign have funnels and calendars like GoHighLevel?

Not meaningfully. ActiveCampaign offers landing pages on higher tiers but has no full funnel builder, membership areas or native booking calendars. Most ActiveCampaign users pair it with separate tools for those jobs, which is exactly the cost GoHighLevel's bundle removes.

How long does migrating from ActiveCampaign to GoHighLevel take?

Contact and tag import takes a day. Rebuilding automations as Workflows typically takes one to three weeks depending on complexity, and warming your new Mailgun sending domain takes another two to four weeks. Plan for a four-to-six-week parallel run before cancelling ActiveCampaign.

Is ActiveCampaign's email deliverability better than GoHighLevel's?

ActiveCampaign has a strong managed-sending reputation out of the box. GoHighLevel's deliverability through Mailgun can match it, but it depends on your own domain authentication, list hygiene and warm-up discipline — it is configurable rather than automatic, which is a strength for careful operators and a risk for careless ones.
